The Cottage at Thornapple project entailed constructing a new free-standing, 23-bed skilled nursing facility for dementia residents in a comforting, cottage setting. The facility was designed with two identical neighborhoods comprised of resident rooms as well as a kitchen, living room, dining area, and porch. This homelike concept allows residents to maintain more control over their environment, thus reducing stress and anxiety. Utilizing the latest design concepts for dementia residents, all resident rooms are private, single occupancy, with their own restroom.

The warm and homelike “cottage on the lake” theme connects residents with the natural beauty of the area through the use of wood trim details, soft color palettes, inviting fireplaces, and spacious common living and dining areas that allow residents, family and staff to interact together. Family and residents can assist staff with cooking and laundry duties in the neighborhood areas or enjoy their private room that continues the connection to nature with their rich wood flooring and abundant natural light and views.
