The Surgery Center of Kalamazoo is a building project located in a commercial district. The freestanding split-level facility features a multitoned, stratified brick façade with aluminum window frames and tinted glazing, along with a low-arched, standing seam metal roof. Planned and designed to bring fifteen multispecialty surgeons together in one facility, the ambulatory surgery center features four operating rooms outfitted to meet current standards and practices. Other special features, such as a laminar flow hood, were also incorporated in anticipation of future changes in surgical procedures and regulations. Finishes are tastefully reserved and contemporary, with maple-wood detailing featured throughout the facility.
With the lower level devoted to the ambulatory surgery center and the upper level devoted to medical office spaces, it was necessary to establish a clear distinction between businesses by creating separate entrances. To accomplish this separation, the facility was designed to provide walk-out access to each floor, despite obstacles posed by the site’s rather extreme fourteen-foot grade level change. While the project also faced the challenge of a construction phase that coincided with the peak restructuring of the steel industry, Eckert Wordell and the construction management team were proud to deliver for the Kalamazoo Surgery Center on time and under budget.
