With goals to enhance citizen access to programs and services, increase safety and security, and reduce maintenance costs, Kalamazoo County desired to implement a portion of their Facility Master Plan by locating the Office of Community Corrections, the State Probation and Parole Department, and a newly created Video Visitation Center in one county-owned facility.
A new 30,500 SF facility was planned and developed adjacent to the existing Kalamazoo County Jail combining related services in a state of the art facility with enhanced safety and security measures. Additionally, the program called for private consultation offices, classrooms, conference rooms, and other support spaces such as drug testing. A central security screening lobby leads the public to three separate suites for the various departments and program components. The new Video Visitation Center allows communication between the public and inmates while reducing movement and increasing safety. The offices for Community Corrections and Probation and Parole are now conveniently located together enhancing inter-departmental communications and collaboration.
