The Cottage at Thornapple project entailed constructing a new free-standing, twenty-three-bed skilled care nursing facility for dementia residents in a cottage setting. The facility was designed into two identical neighborhoods, which each have a kitchen, living room, dining area, and porch. This homelike concept allows residents to maintain more control over their environment, thus reducing stress and anxiety. Utilizing the latest design concepts for dementia residents, all resident rooms are single occupancy with a restroom to allow for more privacy.
The exterior offers wood construction with residential character. The cottage theme is evident in all the exterior elements but emphasized through custom wood trusses at each entry. The trusses are complemented with tapered wood and stone columns, window and door details, and an exterior siding color palette that is welcoming to residents and their families.
The interior design draws on the welcoming exterior elements and conveys a warm and homelike “cottage on the lake” theme. Wood trim details, soft color palettes, tapered stone columns, inviting fireplaces and spacious common living and dining areas allow residents, family and staff to interact together. Three season porches overlook a rural wooded and wildflower setting. Family and residents can assist staff with cooking and laundry duties or enjoy their private room that showcases a rich wood flooring, personal desk area and luxury private bathroom.
