This 80,000-square-foot medical facility is located on a seventeen-acre site in the planned development of Woodbridge Hills in Portage, Michigan. The programmatic requirements were divided into four major components: outpatient surgery, diagnostic testing and rehabilitation, immediate care, and medical office suites, which come together under one roof to provide comprehensive patient care.
The design solution positions the building in an open meadow with a backdrop of woods and wetlands. The main entry is clearly visible within a two-story rotunda, and its associated covered drop-off facilitates convenient patient access and efficient site circulation. Patient parking is located close to the entrance, while service and staff parking is positioned behind the building away from patient view. The massive size required by the program is scaled down architecturally by utilizing various individual roof forms and articulating exterior walls.
Through careful planning and design, this facility successfully accomplishes one of the primary goals of the project: combining state-of-the-art medical care with a patient-friendly atmosphere.
